There are moments in life when everything is stripped away.
No plan.
No safety net.
No certainty about tomorrow.
September 1, 2023, was one of those moments for me.
I arrived back home in Belize with nothing but breath in my body and questions in my mind. No place to stay. No structure. No clear path forward. Just survival.
And then… there was Ms. Anna Aban Chan.
But the truth is—this wasn’t the first time our paths crossed.
A Connection That Started Years Ago
I first met Ms. Anna back in 2000.
That was one of the hardest times in my life—when my mother passed away, and we returned to Belize to lay her to rest.
Ms. Anna was my grandmother’s next-door neighbor.
Even back then, she stood out.
Always kind.
Always warm.
Always carrying a spirit that you could feel without her having to say much.
A beautiful spirit—that’s the only way to describe her.
I didn’t know then how important she would become in my life.
But life has a way of bringing the right people back around… exactly when you need them most.
When I Had Nothing — She Was There
Fast forward to September 1, 2023.
I was back in Belize again—but under very different circumstances.
No place to go.
No direction.
No safety.
And somehow, in that moment…
She was there again.

Alongside her husband, Mr. Mario, she came to the police station and picked me up like I was her own. Not as a favor. Not as charity. But as if it was simply the right thing to do.
And from that moment on, she gave me something I didn’t even realize I had lost—
stability. dignity. peace.
A Lesson Bigger Than Money
It’s a strange thing to go from one dollar… to six figures… and back to square one.
Most people never experience that kind of swing in life.
It can break you.
It can confuse you.
It can make you question everything about who you are and what really matters.
But Ms. Anna reminded me of something that money never could:
It is love that keeps you strong and grounded.
Not status.
Not numbers.
Not what you had or lost.
Love.
And she didn’t just say it—she lived it, every single day.
A Home When There Was None
Ms. Anna opened her home to me when I had nowhere to go.
Not temporarily. Not cautiously.
Fully. Open arms. Open heart.
She gave me a place to sleep.
A place to think.
A place to breathe again.
It wasn’t just shelter.
It was restoration.
She Brought Me Back to Life
There’s no exaggeration in saying this:
Ms. Anna helped bring me back to life.
She cared about my health.
She made sure I ate.
She made sure I rested.
She made sure I had space—not pressure.

She didn’t interrogate my past.
She didn’t demand my future.
She simply allowed me to exist… and rebuild.
In a world where people often ask, “What can I get from you?”
She lived by a different code:
“What do you need?”
A Heart Bigger Than Her Circumstances
Ms. Anna didn’t have much in material terms.
But what she had… was rare.
A heart that gave freely.
A spirit that didn’t calculate.
A kindness that wasn’t performative.
She gave without keeping score.
More Than Kindness — She Was Family
At a time when I thought I was alone in the world…
She became a mother figure to me.
Not by title.
Not by obligation.
By action.
By presence.
By love.
And that is something I can never repay.
Because what she gave me… saved me.
The Sound That Still Echoes
And now… what hurts the most is what I can still hear.
Her voice.
Clear as day.
“Seven… we love you…”
That wasn’t just words.
That was acceptance.
That was belonging.
That was love without condition.
I’ve been hurt many times in my life. More than most.
I’ve taken losses. I’ve endured things people don’t come back from.
But this one…
This one hits differently.
Because she didn’t meet me at my best.
She met me at my lowest—and still chose to love me.
And now that voice… that love… it echoes in a way that cuts deep and stays with me.
The Weight of Loss
Yesterday, she passed away.
And I won’t pretend I have the words to fully process that.
This one sits heavy.
Because when someone shows up for you at your lowest—
when they help rebuild you when you’re broken—
they become part of your foundation.
And losing them feels like losing a piece of yourself.
What Remains
What I do know is this:
Her impact doesn’t leave with her.
It lives in me.
In how I move.
In how I treat people.
In how I give.
If I ever extend my hand to someone in need…
If I ever open my door without hesitation…
If I ever give without asking for anything in return…
That is her legacy moving through me.
Thank You, Ms. Anna
Thank you for being that same beautiful spirit from 2000… all the way to 2023.
Thank you for showing up in my life when it mattered the most.
Thank you for reminding me what truly matters when everything else is gone.
You gave me something I can never repay—
but I will carry it, honor it, and pass it forward.
Always.

Rest in peace, Ms. Anna Aban Chan.
You were not just a good woman.
You were a rare one.
And I will never forget you.

It appears you’ve been blessed with a biological Mother, and another at the very moment you landed on home soil. We must always be mindful of Universal Laws and the rewards and consequences that accompany them. I salute your perseverance and pray that your friend rests peacefully.
